The Brightness of His Glory...

Who being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;--Hebrews 1:3

I have decided to allow Scripture to interpret Scripture here as I am feeling very small and very inadequate to the task of applying my own words to this passage.   I am truly overwhelmed by the beauty, simplicity and depth of the book of Hebrews.

Who being the brightness of His glory

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.--John 1:14

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.--John 14:9-10

For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to givethe light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.--2nd Corinthians 4:6

and the express image of His person,

The Son is the perfect imprint, the exact representation of the nature and essence of God in time and space. --John MacArthur

whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.--2nd Corinthians 4:4

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.--Colossians 1:15-16

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?--John 14:9

For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;--Colossians 2:9

and upholding all things...

For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.  And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.--Colossians 1:16-17

“You are worthy, O Lord,
To receive glory and honor and power;
For You created all things,
And by Your will they exist and were created.”--Revelation 4:11

Not only does He uphold all things  but he directs all things toward the consummation of all things according to God's sovereign purpose.  He who spoke all things into existence also sustains His creation and consummates His purpose by His word. --John MacArthur

And if you are a believer look at this passage in Romans 8.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.--Romans 8:28

 by the word of His power,

Where the word of a king is, there is power;
And who may say to him, “What are you doing?”--Ecclesiastes 8:4

In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God,  He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.  In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.  And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.--John 1:1-5

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.--2nd Corinthians 4:7

by Himself purged our sins,...

For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.--Hebrews 7:26-27

Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?--Hebrews 9:12-14

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!--John 1:29

sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;...

But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God,--Hebrews 10:12

looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.--Hebrews 12:2

Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.--Romans 8:34

To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.--Revelation 3:21

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness,
The power and the glory,
The victory and the majesty;
For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours;
Yours is the kingdom, O Lord,
And You are exalted as head over all.--1 Chronicles 29:11
