My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast;
I will sing and give praise.
Awake, my glory!
Awake, lute and harp!
I will awaken the dawn.—Psalm 57:7-8
I almost missed this one! My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.
David, despite the heaviness of his trial...despite being in peril and surrounded by enemies...despite his soul being among the lions...WOULD be content and sing praises to His God! Let his adversaries do what they wish! David WOULD sing. The changing of David’s circumstances would not change the song of David’s heart.
Oh, Father! Give me this kind of faith...the kind that sings in the face of trouble. The kind that wavers not even in the darkest moment right before dawn when my heart often becomes overwhelmed by fear. You are my God who bore my sin and saved me, who blesses me, shepherds me and bears me up forever.
Why should I sorrow more?
I trust a Saviour slain,
And safe beneath His sheltering cross
Unmoved I shall remain.
Let Satan and the world,
Now rage or now allure;
The promises in Christ are made
Immutable and sure.
The oath infallible
Is now my spirit’s trust;
I know that He Who spoke the word,
Is faithful, true, and just.
He’ll bring me on my way
Unto my journey’s end;
He’ll be my Father and my God,
My Saviour and my Friend.
So all my doubts and fears
Shall wholly flee away,
And every mournful night of tears
Be turned to joyous day.
All that remains for me
Is but to love and sing,
And wait until the angels come
To bear me to the King.
