Let brotherly love continue.—Hebrews 13:1
Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
6 So we may boldly say:
“The LORD is my helper;
I will not fear.
What can man do to me?”—Hebrews 13:5-6
Hebrews 13 is filled with very practical advice for Christian living.
Verse 1 and verse 6 go perfectly together. If I love my brother, I will do no harm to him because love does no harm to another. Love is the fulfillment of the law. A man who covets seeks after his own gain. Covetousness is the opposite of love. As believers we have no need to seek things for ourselves because God cares for us. In Him we have everything we need.
Psalm 23:1 (NLT) A psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need.
Psalm 23:1 (CSB) The LORD is my shepherd; I have what I need.
Psalm 23:1 (NIV) A psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
Are you getting the picture? We can be content. He is our shield and our exceedingly great reward. His Presence goes before us and is with us. God who cannot lie, who reigns over all and who loves us with an everlasting love has promised that He will never leave us nor forsake us. Spurgeon says this might be rendered:
“He hath said, I will never, never leave thee; I will never, never, never forsake thee;"
God is the One who helps us. Each and every one of His wonderful divine attributes then are engaged on our side!
Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christfn who strengthens me.—Phil 4:11-13
Be strong, and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee."—Deuteronomy 31:6
“When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them."—Isaiah 41:17
