But Who Can Bear a Broken Spirit…

The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness,

But who can bear a broken spirit?Proverbs 18:14

How do you maintain your hope?  How do you keep your heart from being wounded and broken?  How do we, as finite human beings, subject to and very often bombarded with sin, sorrow and weakness, keep our spirits from being wounded or worse, broken. The quick answer is we can’t.

No one can bear a broken spirit because when the spirit is broken, hope is lost. Only God can encourage you at a time like that. Only continuous communion with the Lord can sustain our hearts through the difficult times that each of us face and will face here on this earth.

Beloved…A broken bone can heal, but a broken spirit needs Jesus, the One who was sent to heal the broken-hearted and to comfort those who mourn. The One whose hope is sure and steadfast and is as an anchor to our soul. He is our strength. Make fellowship with Him who who remembers our afflictions and our roamings, who keeps every one of our tears in His bottle, who died so we could live forever, the priority in your life. Give God first choice. Give Him your whole heart…Seek Him.  He will be your support.

Oh Father! Turn away our eyes from looking at worthless things and revive me in your way.

This is my comfort in my affliction,

For Your word has given me life.—Psalm 119:50

Your statutes have been my songs

In the house of my pilgrimage.—Psalm 119:54

My soul clings to the dust;

Revive me according to Your word.Psalm 119:25

My soul melts from heaviness;

Strengthen me according to Your word.—Psalm 119:28

He sent from above, He took me;

He drew me out of many waters.

He delivered me from my strong enemy,

From those who hated me,

For they were too strong for me.

They confronted me in the day of my calamity,

But the LORD was my support.

He also brought me out into a broad place;

He delivered me because He delighted in me.—Psalm 18:16-19

This I recall to my mind,

Therefore I have hope.

Through the LORD's mercies we are not consumed,

Because His compassions fail not.

They are new every morning;

Great is Your faithfulness.

"The LORD is my portion," says my soul,

"Therefore I hope in Him!"—Lamentations 3:21-24

Why are you cast down, O my soul?

And why are you disquieted within me?

Hope in God;

For I shall yet praise Him,

The help of my countenance and my God.—Psalm 42:11

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.—Romans 15:13

I would have lost heart, unless I had believed

That I would see the goodness of the LORD

In the land of the living.

Wait on the LORD;

Be of good courage,

And He shall strengthen your heart;

Wait, I say, on the LORD!Psalm 27:13-14

I will meditate on Your precepts,

And contemplate Your ways.

I will delight myself in Your statutes;

I will not forget Your word.—Psalm 119:15-16
