I learned a new word today. Illimitable...so, of course, I had to use it. What does it mean? It means incapable of being limited or bounded...measureless. Thinking on its meaning in terms of the promises of God...WOW! WOW! WOW!
Our God's arm is not short and his abilities are illimitable. There is nothing too hard for the Lord. God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think. Jesus tells us this:
And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
God's ability to do goes way beyond man's ability to ask. Ask, don't leave anything on the table. God says this through the mouth of His prophet Isaiah
I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me.
I will end this exhortation to pray with what is for me the most illimitable statement in the Bible...What a basis it gives us for faith...what a foundation it gives us for prayer.
Did you get that? Call to mind when you pray that God did not spare His own Son in accomplishing our redemption. There is our assurance...there is our guarantee. He who has not withheld his only Son from us will most certainly give us all that we ask for that is good. He has already given us His best. He has already proven His love for us in Christ Jesus. He will withhold nothing and will freely give all things to him who believes and prays.
"Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."--Hebrews 4:12
Girls, God wants us to pray and He wants to answer our prayers. With all that I have said above I must add the following to give you the full picture of what Scripture says in regard to God and prayer. God in His word instructs us as to how and even whether He will hear and answer our prayers. His promise to ask is not a blanket one given to all but has limits and conditions. God does not reward or honor unfaithfulness.
Firstly, God only hears the prayers of His children. God does not hear the prayers of those who reject Him as their Lord and Savior. The only prayer from an unsaved person that God will hear is the cry for forgiveness and salvation.
Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.--John 9:31
Secondly, We must come to Him in faith and belief...
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. --Hebrews 11:6
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.--James 1:5-8
Thirdly, we must ask in His name or according to His nature....What does that mean? Psalm 37:4 says this:
Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Delight yourself in Him...immerse yourself in His word...He will make His desires your desires...What He wants then, you will want also. You will pray like Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane..."nevertheless not my will, but yours be done." Jesus had no agenda but that of His Father in Heaven and that is how He prayed. .
Fourthly, your prayers will not be answered if there is unconfessed sin in your life.
If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear.--Psalm 66:18
Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, --Isaiah 59:1-2
The Lord will not hear your prayers if you are not living for Him...God's will for us is in His word.
If you are walking in disobedience don't bother coming to God unless you are going to Him to come clean. The prayers of the disobedient are an abomination to Him. Put Christ first in your life...obey His commandments....love Him with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength.
One who turns away his ear from hearing the law, Even his prayer is an abomination.--Proverbs 28:9
And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.--1 John 3:22
If there is sin or a lack of faithfulness in your life, go to Him now and confess it...allow Him to cleanse you from all the unrighteousness in your life. Whatever the past might be, your future can be clean. Decide this very day to live completely and utterly for Him. Our God is the God of new beginnings. His mercies are new each and every morning. He will not scold you but will draw you close in His arms of love and promises to hear your cry and help you.
If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.---2nd Chronicles 7:14
