Pictures of Christ in Exodus 29

“You shall also have the bull brought before the tabernacle of meeting, and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands on the head of the bull. ¹¹ Then you shall kill the bull before the LORD, by the door of the tabernacle of meeting.--Exodus 29:10-11




and this from Leviticus 1...


Now the LORD called to Moses, and spoke to him from the tabernacle of meeting, saying, ² “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When any one of you brings an offering to the LORD, you shall bring your offering of the livestock—of the herd and of the flock.  ‘If his offering is a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish; he shall offer it of his own free will at the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the LORD. ⁴ Then he shall put his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him.

This is another beautiful picture of Christ in the Old Testament sacrifices.  


And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.

When a bull was brought to the tabernacle door for sacrifice, the one who was offering it would place his hands on the animal's head symbolically transferring all guilt and sin over onto the animal.  The animal, then, having received the sins, was slain.  

This is when the awareness must have come to the one whose sin was being atoned for that this animal was his substitute and was dying in his place for his sins. 

Romans 6:23  "For the wages of sin is death,"

Do you see the picture of Jesus here...the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world for our sin?  

Isaiah 53:6 "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all." 

Jesus is our substitute...He died not for His own sin...He had none...but for yours and mine.  

The word atonement means covered. The atonement of the Old Testament covered sin temporarily, but it did not eliminate sin or later judgment. Blessed is he, the psalmist says, whose sin is covered.   

For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

The one time sacrifice of Jesus, however, did.  His suffering and death fully satisfied God's wrath forever and assures us of eternal salvation.  Jesus' death looks both forward and backward.  The saints of the OT were saved exactly the same way we are...through faith.  


"whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, ²⁶ to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus."--Romans 3:25-26  


"And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance."--Hebrews 9:15  


Jesus is our substitute.  He is our sacrifice.  Our guilt was transferred onto Him.  


³ Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently;
      He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high.
       ¹⁴ Just as many were astonished at you,
      So His visage was marred more than any man,
      And His form more than the sons of men;
       ¹⁵ So shall He sprinkle^[b] many nations.
      Kings shall shut their mouths at Him;
      For what had not been told them they shall see,
      And what they had not heard they shall consider. 
¹ Who has believed our report?
      And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
       ² For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
      And as a root out of dry ground.
      He has no form or comeliness;
      And when we see Him,
      There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
       ³ He is despised and rejected by men,
      A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
      And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
      He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
       ⁴ Surely He has borne our griefs
      And carried our sorrows;
      Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
      Smitten by God, and afflicted.
       ⁵ But He was wounded for our transgressions,
      He was bruised for our iniquities;
      The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
      And by His stripes we are healed.
       ⁶ All we like sheep have gone astray;
      We have turned, every one, to his own way;
      And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
       ⁷ He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
      Yet He opened not His mouth;
      He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
      And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
      So He opened not His mouth.
       ⁸ He was taken from prison and from judgment,
      And who will declare His generation?
      For He was cut off from the land of the living;
      For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
       ⁹ And they^[a] made His grave with the wicked—
      But with the rich at His death,
      Because He had done no violence,
      Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
       ¹⁰ Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him;
      He has put Him to grief.
      When You make His soul an offering for sin,
      He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
      And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.
       ¹¹ He shall see the labor of His soul,^[b]and be satisfied.
      By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
      For He shall bear their iniquities.
       ¹² Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
      And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
      Because He poured out His soul unto death,
      And He was numbered with the transgressors,
      And He bore the sin of many,
      And made intercession for the transgressors.
