Shepherd of My Soul...

And Solomon said: “You have shown great mercy to Your servant David my father, because he walked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You; You have continued this great kindness for him, and You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”--1 Kings 3:7-9

So often, Father, I feel overwhelmed by my responsibilities and circumstances. Beaten and battered....tired, scared and definitely the wrong person for the job you have given me.  So much that I face in this world just seems too much for me to handle.  A line from on of my favorite children's book comes to mind.

“And this mess is so big  And so deep and so tall,   We cannot pick it up.  There is no way at all!” --Dr. Seuss - The Cat in the Hat

My kids know this quote well.  I have said it often when I am thinking they are feeling this way.  It is my way of telling them that I understand...life is hard.  Getting through it sometimes seems impossible.  And then I point them to their God and remind them of who He is.  My prayer for me and for them is below...

Father,

You change the times and the seasons.  You remove kings and establish them.  You give wisdom to the wise and knowledge to them that know understanding.  You, Lord, reveal the deep and secret things.  You know what is in the darkness....light dwells in You.  You, God, rule in the kingdom of men.  All any of us have is from You.  Your inspiration, Father, gives me understanding.

I am like a little child before You.  I do not know how to come in or go out.  Like Solomon, I seek You....I seek Your wisdom.  I seek Your understanding.  I commit to You, both my way and my cause.  You, O God, do great things...unsearchable and marvelous things without number.  Open my ears, Father, to hear your direction.  Open my heart always to desire Your presence.  You make me whole...Without You I go astray and am like a sheep without a shepherd.  I need You to lead me and go in and out before me.  You are the Shepherd of my soul. You provide me with all I need and give me abundant life.  You, O Lord, can pick up any mess...no matter how big or tall...You bring beauty from ashes.
