They Looked to Him and Were Radiant…

They looked to Him and were radiant,

And their faces were not ashamed.—Psalm 34:5

Was blessed last night by time spent in Psalm 34.  I loved what Charles Spurgeon had to say about verse 5.

They looked to Him and were radiant,

The psalmist declares that his case was not different but that it matched the lives of all the faithful. All who looked to the Lord were brightened; their faces began to shine, and there spirits were uplifted. What a blessing one look at the Lord can be!  There is life, light, liberty, love and everything in a look at the crucified One. Never did a hurting heart look in vain to the good Physician. Never did a dying soul tour it’s darkening eye to the brazen serpent to find its virtue. (Numbers 21:8)

And their faces were not ashamed.

Joy, not blushes, covered their faces.  We who trust in God have no need to be ashamed of our confidence. Time and eternity will justify our reliance.

Quote below by David Smith, (1792-1867)

The more we think on Our Lord, and the less we think about ourselves, the better. By looking to Him, we will keep our heads, and especially our hearts steady in the deep waters of affliction. Often I have thought of this when crossing the water opposite the old place of Langholm.  I found that when I looked down on the water, I got dizzy. I therefore fixed my eyes on a steady object on the other side and got comfortably through.

You will keep him in perfect peace,

Whose mind is stayed on You,

Because he trusts in You.

Trust in the LORD forever,

For in YAH, the LORD, is everlasting strength.—Isaiah 26:3-4
