Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.—John 18:18
Not only does Scripture tell us that after Jesus’ arrest, Peter followed Christ at a distance, but here we find him warming himself at the fires of his enemies. Not good, Peter.
But Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire.—Mark 15:54
We know the story…we know where Peter’s evil associations led him that night. He sat too close to the false warmth and protection of worldly fires and got burned.
Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, "This man was also with Him."
But he denied Him, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him."
And after a little while another saw him and said, "You also are of them."
But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"
Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean."
But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are saying!"
Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." So Peter went out and wept bitterly.
Last night I read about a very young woman who had just been told that her mom’s cancer had returned. As heartbreaking as this news was, this young princess of our great king was overheard by her mom singing in the shower the words from this Christian hymn written by Edward Mote.
“My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness…on Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand” 🎶 over and over. I don’t know about you, but when I grow up, I want to be just like her.
Beloved…where do you go…
When doubts assail
When troubles come
When hurts abound
When loneliness encompasses
When fears rise
When hope dwindles
When confusion clouds
Where do you go to get warm?
I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.—Psalm 121:1, 2
The name of the LORD is a strong tower;
The righteous run to it and are safe.—Proverbs 18:10
Cross-reference Verses
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says:
"Awake, you who sleep,
Arise from the dead,
And Christ will give you light."—Ephesians 5:11-12
Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:
"I will dwell in them
And walk among them.
I will be their God,
And they shall be My people."
Therefore
"Come out from among them
And be separate, says the Lord.
Do not touch what is unclean,
And I will receive you."
"I will be a Father to you,
And you shall be My sons and daughters,
Says the LORD Almighty."—2 Corinthians 6:14-18
Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits."—1 Corinthians 15:33
He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will be destroyed.—Proverbs 13:20
Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
For the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.—Psalm 1
