1 O LORD, do not rebuke me in Your anger,
Nor chasten me in Your hot displeasure.
2 Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am weak;
O LORD, heal me, for my bones are troubled.
3 My soul also is greatly troubled;
But You, O LORD—how long?
4 Return, O LORD, deliver me!
Oh, save me for Your mercies’ sake!
5 For in death there is no remembrance of You;
In the grave who will give You thanks?
6 I am weary with my groaning;
All night I make my bed swim;
I drench my couch with my tears.
7 My eye wastes away because of grief;
It grows old because of all my enemies.
8 Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity;
For the LORD has heard the voice of my weeping.
9 The LORD has heard my supplication;
The LORD will receive my prayer.
10 Let all my enemies be ashamed and greatly troubled;
Let them turn back and be ashamed suddenly.
I love that whenever I read a Psalm of David he ALWAYS turns to the Lord in His turmoil, trial and trouble. He is such a great example in my own grief and sadness. One of my favorite prayers to pray because it is not only simple but also so very perfect is this one:
Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am weak;—Psalm 6:2a
In His distress David does not look outward to his circumstances or inward to himself but always up to His God of mercy.
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.—Hebrews 4:15-16
Jesus was a Man of sorrows and He was acquainted with grief. He came to ultimately right all wrongs. He came so the wrath of God for our sin would fall on Him and not us. He came so that we would not have to spend an eternity in torment. He came so that we could instead spend eternity with Him in heaven where there will be no more death, sorrow, pain or crying. Because of Jesus, we, as believers, can know for certain that God hears our supplications and accepts our prayers.
1 I will praise You, O LORD, with my whole heart;
I will tell of all Your marvelous works.
2 I will be glad and rejoice in You;
I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.—Psalm 9:1-2
