Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Saul took him that day, and would not let him go home to his father’s house anymore. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt.—1 Samuel 18:1-4
Jonathan and David’s friendship is one of the closest recorded in the Bible. It was based on their mutual commitment to God and not just to each other. For this reason it weathered all and remained to the very end.
I am so thankful for the friendships I have in Christ especially the one that the Lord has blessed me with in my husband. Truly, nothing can separate us because we are both committed to SOMEONE so much greater than us and are dedicated to following His will and His pattern for our life together. Christ is our all and is in all. Our hearts and our lives are surrendered and submitted to God. Envy and selfish ambition are put aside and His will is desired and pursued. Even when sin temporarily separates, we can know that because each of us has the Spirit of God and is committed to following Christ, conviction will come. Our fellowship in Him and in each other will be restored. He is working and will continue to work in my husband’s heart as well as my own to transform us into His image and present us faultless before Him.
No matter what we face, no matter what obstacles might try to interfere with our love and commitment for and to one another, our faith in God makes us overcomers...in Him we are more than conquerors. In Him, nothing can separate us...not even death.
